The Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf franchise has made 11 movies since 2009.
From 2009 to 2015, a donghua movie featuring the Chinese zodiac was released each winter, coinciding with the Chinese New Year.
In 2012 and 2013, the franchise also released two live-action donghua films featuring Wolffy as the main character in the summer.
Due to various complications, the zodiac-themed movie series was paused starting in 2016, but CPE continued to release a new movie concept poster every year. In 2022, the franchise’s film plans were rebooted, and several film sequels or prequels to television donghua were produced. Among them, The World Guardians was the franchise’s first donghua movie to be released in the summer.
All donghua films have official Mandarin and Cantonese dubs produced by CPE, while the live-action donghua films only have a Mandarin version. All the films have achieved a total box office of CN¥1.1 billion in the Chinese mainland.
The first seven donghua films, collectively known as the Chinese zodiac series, were introduced to Hong Kong by Intercontinental Film Distributors (HK) Ltd., where they achieved a total box office of HK$7.4 million. The same company also brought these films to Macao. With the exception of Movie 3, which was released simultaneously in both cities, the remaining six films were released in Macao on dates later than their Hong Kong premieres, but the exact dates remain unverified now. In both Hong Kong and Macao, the films were presented with Cantonese dub and no subtitles. Additionally, the live-action donghua film I Love Wolffy 1, which was showcased at Hong Kong International Film Festival 2013, had a one-day exhibition in its original Mandarin version on April 4, 2013.
Taiwan has a policy that limits the number of mainland films that can be released in the Taiwan region to 10 per year. Before 2013, this quota was on a first-come, first-served basis. Starting from 2013, films were selected through a lottery system. By 2012, Gold Typhoon Music Co., Ltd. had preemptively secured the release quotas for Movie 2 and Movie 3, while Buena Vista International, Inc. had done the same for Movie 4. Starting from 2013, after the lottery system was implemented, Buena Vista still applied for Movies 5 and 6 to be released but were not selected. No further movies were applied for release in Taiwan thereafter.
From 2019 to 2020, Movie 7, Movie 4, and Movie 5 were successively introduced to South Korea by Highlight Pictures and Wide Release, and only the Korean-dubbed versions were released, with some content slightly edited. The three movies achieved a total box office of KR₩35.5 million.
Facewhite Inc. introduced Movie 8 to Japan in 2022 in Mandarin dub with Japanese subtitles and released it in a few select theaters for a limited time during a film festival they held. The company’s official website also features a Japanese introduction for Movie 9, but there is no information regarding its release yet.
The first seven donghua movies were uploaded to the official Chinese YouTube channel in 2019.
In addition, Weslie, Tibbie, Slowy and Wolffy made a cameo appearance in the movie One Hundred Thousand Bad Jokes II produced by Alpha. Wolffy made a cameo appearance in the movie Happy Heroes: Multiverse Rescue produced by Msc Co., Ltd.
